The way I look at it – it is next to impossible to sue somebody who lives in another country for malpractice. If you are in the USA – Colorado, Connecticut, and Washington require licensing for hypnotherapy, so you must have a license in these states to practice online hypnosis with people who live there. I doubt that their government officials will be knocking on your door or sending you threatening mail – but your insurance will refuse to cover any damages if you practice hypnosis with residents of these states and get malpractice claim. (At least that is what my insurance told me about online sessions, so check with your own provider – what is their policy) I do not know of any insurance with worldwide coverage, but it is really difficult to sue somebody in a foreign country in malpractice cases…that is what doctors always tell you on the topic “why you should not go to Mexico for dental work or get liposuction in Brazil” ( I went to Costa Rica for dental work anyway, it is so much cheaper, but it is risky) If you practice guided meditation or any kind of psychic work, spiritual healing etc – you are not obligated to have any certifications or licences, as these things are usually considered ‘for entertainment purposes only”, or ‘religious freedom” – just make sure to put a disclaimer on your website that you do not practice medicine or cure any illnesses. Being an ordained minister is always a good idea if you do not have insurance or proper licensing, Universal Life Church ordains anybody for free, and it is a real church if somebody wants to check. You also might want to mention that you do not practice psychotherapy or counseling in the USA as these things require licensing. I mention on my website that I have a degree in psychology, but I do not say ‘psychologist”, as in the USA to be called a ‘psychologist” you have to be Ph.D. and licensed, even Doctor Phil got in trouble with some psychological association as he has Ph.D degree but does not have licenses in any state, he is just a ‘TV psychologist”…In Europe, it is a bit different, much less strict. Some states. like Florida, do not allow to use the term ‘therapy” unless you are an MD or a licensed psychotherapist, and even to do psychotherapy online you need some sort of licensing.
