I just had Zoom session with a fellow practitioner, and in the middle of the session, I got the pop up window “You have 10 minutes left. Upgrade to pro”, so I had to rush through the session to finish in 10 minutes (luckily we were close to the end anyway). This never happened before, one on one sessions are supposed to have unlimited time for free. Does anybody know how to avoid this situation in the future?

I had that happened when someone came into the Zoom room “accidentally” for just a few seconds. I presume it was 30 minutes later when I got a similar message. The meeting host should be able to “lock meeting”. I’ve often done that, even with a paid account. On my screen it shows up under “Manage Participants” and then under “More”.

The minute I start working commercially with Zoom – I will pay for the business account, but for now, it is just trading sessions or doing videos for my future youtube channel, so I’d rather keep it free…It is supposed to be free any length as long as it is just one person. How do you lock the meeting? I wonder if there are several windows open with the same client, they might consider it to be several meetings (we had to restart when we got disconnected).

Does anyone have other options that work like zoom but are not zoom? How well do they work? I had a thought- has anyone tried google hangouts but while recording a video or going doing a youtube video but private as their session recording between two people?

I’ve used Skype a lot, along with MP3 Skype recorder for maybe a decade. It used to work very well. I did many hundreds of sessions that way. In the last year or so Skype has “gone to hell in a hand basket”!!!! I would not be surprised if that is by design.

I thought about Zoom the same way – just harassing you into paying. I like Zoom way more than Skype, plus I can’t use Skype on Chromebooks, and I love them for traveling. (Chromebooks come with all Google stuff and apps, but they block Skype as they have Google teleconferencing, but they do not block Zoom)

Hi Irina. If you are not signed up to Zoom (monthly payment plan), you only have 40 minutes I believe. I pay may £15 a month. It has been worth it.

I used to use Zoom Free Account, I now pay the monthly fee.

My memory is that with zoom free account, you can have a zoom call with 1 other person for unlimited time; a zoom call with 2 or more other people, there is a per-call time limit of 40 minutes.

If you are having a call with just 1 person, and they leave the call and come back in, Zoom can see that as 2 people. Then suddenly you have a time limit of 40 minutes.

Call Zoom. I seem to remember that I spoke with somebody there, very helpful, and answered all my questions (for example, locking people out, etc).

Free version is Unlimited time with two people. Did you set up the meeting as scheduled date/time and accidently set a length of time for it?

Agreed with just paying for the monthly fee- it simply solves all the problems and provides more services. Skype is the less attractive and less stable (in my opinion) alternative and I know of no other services that even come close to Zoom. They have won many awards for their platform and service, and the monthly fee is a deductible business expense.

Hello Irina. This happened to me too. It was because my friend logged into the meeting room with her phone. she logged out because quality wasn’t good. Then logged in again with her laptop. That counted for 2 people, even though there was always just one person/one device with me. So we could only chat for 40 minutes. Lucky for us that at that time, the zoom popped up asked if I wanted to try a trial unlimited call with over one participants. So I accepted and could continue the session.

So the solution is to make sure that if your client wants to switch devices, or got cut off and need to re-enter the room, you end the meeting for all. and log in again.

Please also check with zoom live-chat help. They are always very helpful. I asked the live chat people questions many times, they never tried to make me upgrade to pro.

    Hi Stephanie

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Doing sessions then with the free version seems complex and risky in re-establishing a connection

… one of the things I tell all my online clients is that the ZOOM link remains the SAME… and NO re-logging in or ending meeting and restarting required.

Hey Candace, the link does remain the same. There is no relogging in requirement. Only if the client accidentally log themselves out, and then re enter the meeting, it will count as an extra person. So in this case, the practitioner can quickly end the meeting and enter the room again as if it’s a brand new meeting.

We had to restart the meeting in a new room, as my internet connection broke and I had to call my internet provider and reset my modem, but there were no more interruptions in the second room…I will contact Zoom and ask their customer service.
