Hi all–I cannot select the business category to drop this question into because it’s grayed out, so I’m trusting that it will end up in the correct place. “Directory Help” was the only category that was even close that was not grayed out.

I just finished my first 25 sessions today (yay!!), and have my first paid client booked for next week. My intention is (was) to continue to work out of my home, as we have a nice spare room set up for sessions. It has worked out great being here while doing my “intern” sessions. In fact, it has been pretty awesome being in our home, and my dog has been a great help. <3

My husband had me call my insurance company to add a rider to our policy to allow for a home business, and based on me doing hypnosis, they said they will no longer insure me! Yikes!! I did not see this coming and don’t have any idea what to do. I looked through the home-office forum postings, but wasn’t able to find anything about homeowner’s insurance.

For those of you who work out of your home-office, what do you do for your homeowners insurance? Do any of you have USAA?

Like I said, I’m at a loss, and had no idea this was even a consideration. I’m feeling like my QHHT bubble has just been burst. :'(

Thank you for any suggestions you can provide.

There are many posts on this subject. Just type insurance in the search box, above discussion and you will see a lot of them.

Speaking just for myself, I never considered homeowners insurance and I don’t think I would. If I do any insurance, it would be liability insurance as a practitioner only. If anyone should happen to get hurt while in my home, which would then fall under the 2nd umbrella of homeowners insurance, I guess I would just keep it simple in that someone was visiting me. Don’t think it would be relevant as to why they were visiting me. You should also have a good Waiver for clients to sign. People can sue regardless but it will/does help to have it before starting a session.

Hi there–Violeta, I read through all the insurance threads and found nothing regarding cancellation of a homeowner’s policy because of hypnosis-type of business in the home. I searched/read for quite awhile. ?

USAA explained that they used to offer a separate rider, but too many people sued so they will no longer offer it and will not cover me if they find out I’m doing this type of work out of my home that they insure. Anyway….I’ll do some more research. Hopefully they will continue to insure me if I get my own separate coverage letting them off the hook. Realistically, if something happens, then my own personal professional/personal liability would cover it and USAA wouldn’t/shouldn’t be involved in any way.

Eh…just more things to consider that I hadn’t thought about!

Violeta you are correct- that information is in multiple places. Some members may not have access to SOME of the DC specific categories where they are located. Raquel actually does have access to all of our extensive archives, but some of our newer members won’t be able to access the QHHT categories. It is for those members primarily I post the following:

This organization is the one who provides a liability insurance for practitioners- I recommend it to all, it is affordable and created for people who practice our kinds of modalities.

Now, if you are practicing out of your HOME and are concerned about that connection/liability in association with that, talking to your homeowner policy providers is the correct thing to do.

If you have or lease an office space, there are often requirements to have liability insurance. My former lease required it, my current lease does not, but I have decided to keep it current anyway.

You do not tell about home business to your homeowner’s insurance Co! I rent my place for summer and work from home – and I would never tell it to my homeowners’ insurance or they will immediately cancel it! They do not cover businesses or renters, you need a different type of policy for a home business. It would only matter if you had a lot of business equipment there which could be destroyed by flood or fire. A homeowners policy does not cover malpractice or any liability damages to your clients anyway. You can try to find a policy which covers both home and home business, but this will cost you a lot, and there is no need for it, as long as you do not have more than a computer or some music equipment and furniture, which is covered by your homeowner’s policy anyway.

@Irina_Nola–yes, thank you! I’ve since discovered all of this in my research over the past few days. My knee jerk reaction two days ago was “holy crap…now what?” I had no idea it would be such a big deal to the insurance company. It’s all part of the learning process for me, I suppose. Anyway, I will stick with professional and general liability insurance as originally planned and not involve the insurance company at all. Thank you all for the guidance!
