  • Looking for advice about what to call myself/business because my state doesn't allow "hynotherapist"

Hello! In North Carolina we are not allowed to call ourselves hypnotherapist unless we have a medical background. I am trying to decide what to call myself on print/website/social media. My website is just my name, Janet Ballinger (it isn’t active yet). I am trained in Client Centered, Transpersonal Integrative Hypnotherapy (through a Newton Institute training program), Regression therapy, BQH, HypnoFit, and might eventually do QHHT. I will do my Life Between Lives Training (Newton Institute) in 2 years. I love spiritual hypnosis more than anything else and am focusing on that, but I am also a Reiki Master/Teacher, I do shamanic work, Angel Therapy, Oracle Card readings, etc. I have wondered if I should highlight what my business does with the words Quantum Healing or Quantum Healing Hypnosis (though it limits some of the other modalities I draw on?). Or maybe call it Spiritual Hypnosis or Spiritual Healing Hypnosis? Do you have better suggestions? I also plan on doing GROUP PAST LIFE REGRESSION and BQH REGRESSIONS. Thank you so much! Janet

    Hi Janet,
I like to use the term quantum healer. I like to avoid the term hypnotherapist anyway, since many people often have a pre-conceived idea of what a hypnotherapist might do. Like smoking cessation, weight loss, etc. Since BQH, and some of the other modalities you offer, by their nature seems to have a more spiritual focus. So for me, I like that the term Quantum implies that too and is broad enough.
I like the term you came ‘Spiritual Healing hypnosis’ alot. That describes what you offer pretty well Good Luck getting your public presence together!

Thank you so much! I appreciate your feedback very much and the kind words. And I agree that there are so many misnomers about the word hypnotherapist. Ugh!

I googled “hypnosis in North Carolina” and found a whole bunch of hypnotherapy businesses, I doubt they are all medical doctors. Here is an article about hypnosis regulations in different states, there are no regulations in North Carolina. In some states, you can’t use the word ‘therapist” if you are not an MD or a licensed psychotherapist, but a “hypnotherapist” is not a medical doctor or a psychologist. Plus you can always say ‘hypnotist”, or ‘hypnosis practitioner” if they are that strict.

@Candace_CrawGoldman Thank you for the ideas. And I hope to be apart of this movement to help the world know more about the importance of Quantum Healers and healing! Thank you for all you do for us.

Thanks for your response too. It is unregulated in N.C. and there is a lot of gray area, but I decided early on that I would’t mix business with the grey area that N.C. is. Many of my friends in my area call themselves Hypnotherapists but you run the risk of legal stuff if someone wants to stir things up (unless you have a higher degree in a related medical or therapeutic field). I know one person that was forced to change their name….and the State can do that too…ugh. But, I do feel very lucky that our state is unregulated so that I can at least practice. A lot of people in my area call themselves hypnotists, but that doesn’t feel right for me. I am going to use the word “hypnosis practitioner” and call my work xx Hypnosis (not sure what the XX will be yet) instead of Hypnotherapy. I sure look forward to the day when we don’t have these hoops to jump through. Thanks again for taking the time to look stuff up and respond. 🙂

When you add your business to ‘Google Local Business” – which is free and very good for getting local clients or tourists, you have a choice of ‘Hypnotherapy”, ‘Alternative medicine” and there is also something like ‘psychic” or ‘metaphysical services” – you can choose any of it, and add as many key-words as you want – so if you do a lot of modalities you can choose a category which is the most general.
