  • PayPal VS Square for credit card processing

Just wanted to share my experience with my Qhht peers when I went to get a credit card reader.
I had several clients ask me if I took credit cards in the last few weeks, so figured it was time to add that to my payment options.
I ended up going w/ PayPal Here, which is Pay Pal’s credit card service. I have been using PayPal for my personal use for 14 yrs, and it seemed it would be an seamless addition to my already existing account.
I started the process online and ordered their upgraded card /chip reader, excited with this new addition to my business.
Just figuring when it arrived it would be as easy to get it all up and running as they touted.
However, that’s not exactly how it all went down.
First, Pay Pal automatically upgraded my personal account to a business account… which was sort of a bummer, but I was like “oh well, no biggie…”
Then when I got the reader in the mail, downloaded the app, and tried to set it up I got an error message saying I was ineligible to use their Pay Pal Here credit card service.
I was stunned! So I called them and after being shuffled round a bit from department to department, they opened a case for me and said they’d contact me soon to let me know how to proceed.
Next day I got an email saying I was too much of a risk to use their credit card service. HUH?! What the heck?!
Mind you I have excellent credit and have been running my own successful preschool for 12 yrs now.
I called them again and they’re not able to tell me what the deal is, or why I’m ineligible. Something about my business model being too risky…Again, how in the world did they come to that conclusion?!
However, after some googling, seems this is pretty common as there’s all sorts of other people complaining about this exact scenario.
So next day, I looked into Square credit card Point of Sale credit card processing.
I found it funny as their home page in large letters says “Square works for every business.”
Hmmmm…seems they’re directing that at all of us undesirable misfits rejected from “Paypal Here”. 😉
So I signed up and since I know some of you already are using them, my guess is that it’ll work without an hitch.
Anyway, just wanted to help any of you to avoid the hassle of Pay Pal Here if you’re in the market and looking for credit card processing.

Square has worked well for me, both as a psychotherapist and BQH. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I know paypal business accounts are a nightmare, and your story is not the first I have heard. They simply don’t care, because everyone use them in one form or another and they are not short of clients. It seems like its a normal response to say you are a risky client, or risky business. I would rather this happened in the beginning than later when you had thousands in you bank account, because I have personal stories of them keeping money for ages before paying out, because clients may request refunds.

@Chrysilla_Lewies Phew! Seems I may have dodged a bullet. Thank for letting me know that.

You can also look into STRIPE, the interface we currently use for the Directory/Forum.

Had the exact same experience with Paypal. The main problem is that they don’t tell you any of this until after you go through ordering the stuff, paying, etc, and then try to set it up. Very poor customer service!

    Hi DeAnna,
as QHHT practitioner and a hairstylist I tell my clients I accept PayPal, Venmo, checks and cash. I do have Square, but honestly don’t want to pay any fee or deal with the added headache, taxes, etc, etc…

UPDATE: Got my Square reader in the mail and have been using it since hassle free!! Yes, they do take a few bucks out for their service fee, but I’m sure this enables some folks the ability to afford to have a QHHT session, where if they had to pay for it all upfront that may be a deterrent. So I feel that at the end of the day, it definitely widens my clientele base.

I have used both square and PayPal and they both charge the same amount in fees.
Square however sends your money directly to your bank account.
Paypal required me to request the money.
I find square so much easier.

I use both PayPal and Square. Initially, I have my clients submit their reservation deposit to me via PayPal’s “send to a friend” option to avoid cc fees, and advise that their balance due can be paid in cash or credit card, but if they prefer to pay by cc, I charge an additional fee (basically, the client is paying the cc fees). You have no idea how many people bring cash or just pay the entire amount up front via PayPal’s “send to a friend” to save paying an extra $10.00. But when they come for their session, if they want to pay via a cc, I only use the Square reader. It’s just seamless and both charge the exact same fees.

Has anyone of you tried money order? Also, do you charge the final balance before or after an online session?

No, I’ve never tried money orders. But since they’re like cash, I’m sure it would be fine. 🙂
I now charge final balance before even booking a session… this was after a several people flaked out and I had had their appts reserved for several weeks in advance. It’s a bummer when you’ve reserved an afternoon for them, and not made any plans that day because you thought you would be working and then they cancel for a reason which is not much more than something like – ” Well, I’ve got a really busy day today and I’ve just got too much I’ve gotta do… etc..” I rent an office space for sessions, so when someone cancels last minute, that’s a loss of revenue I need to pay rent on that space.
Now that clients have to pay before they book with me, it seems to have cut out the ones who were not *really* serious about going thru the QHHT process. (I do have a very clear refund/reschedule/cancellation policy which is stated before they pay.)
I only do QHHT sessions on weekends and if I have pushed everything in my life aside to reserve time for you, then I’m expecting you’re doing the same since we’ve already spoken and agreed to have a session together.

The people who are really serious about having a session will not think twice about committing with payment *before* their session and if they are thinking twice because they have to pay, then in my opinion, there’s a good chance they may find a reason to wiggle out of it.
Bottom line is I’m more than happy to make clients a priority but expect that
same respect, especially when a client has initiated contact with me,
asking me to do so and a financial commitment demonstrates that.
Our time and energy is valuable and I desire to work with people who get that and don’t waste mine. 🙂
    Hope this is helpful.

DeAnna I am also very protective of my time. I am finding that if I do a short interview over the phone before booking someone, mu intuition lets me know whether to book them or not. I don’t want to take clients who either won’t show up, or their SC won’t show up. I am learning that there are red flags that I pay attention to, such as “I need to see you to get x physical problem healed” or “I am curious and want a session.” I am looking for clients who say,” I don’t know why, but I am really compelled to have a session with you, I think I will get some answers to questions I have. ” Those are the clients that are being led to me by their higher mind, and we have wonderful sessions.
I just did a session with a woman with lung cancer, and she wanted to know why did she have it. We went to a past life where her mother abandoned her to a couple who made her work from sunup to sundown. When she left that life, I asked if there was someone to greet her. She laughed and said it was her mother from that life. I asked if her mother had anything to say to her, and she said her mother asked if she would forgive her. She forgave her mother, and her mother led her to her Council and the Library where she did a life review. I asked why did she choose that life to remember, and she said she feels that her mother in the present life has not been there for her. I asked if this is the same lesson as her last life, that she needed to forgive her present mother, and her Council said yes, it was holding her back and creating this disease. I asked her if she could forgive her mother in this life, and she did. I then asked Archangel Michael to cut any bonds or cords that remained from her past and present association with her mothers so that she can be free from this trauma. After the session she said she felt light and energenic, full of energy and love. She wrote me the next day and said she felt so different, she couldn’t believe how powerful the session was.
My point is, if she had called me and asked if I could heal her cancer, I would have said no, the only healing is self healing. I would not have booked her. Since she asked for the reason for her cancer, I felt that once we ID’d the cause, we could then do some spiritual work to move her out of any blocks/karma. This method works best for me. I am also asking anyone who shows up (spirit guides, council, loved ones in the spirit world, etc.) to assist in the healing and to continue working with the client after the session.
    Love to all. Barbara

This is good info. Thank you for posting. I started out only working online. So, I ask clients for pay in advance through my website. Now that I do some in person work, I ask for full payment through the website in advance or at least half. Then they can login and pay the balance through my website when I see them in person. It’s just how I’ve done some of my financial records by having everything go through the website. But that payment is through PayPal, and sometimes PayPal is whacky.

Whacky PayPal: I had to call Pay Pal today with what I thought was a simple question. All my verification info was fine: I gave the last 4 of my social, and my phone number I called with matches the number in their system. For some reason the Pay Pal representative kept asking me how to spell my name and even said it was not how he saw it in the system. I told him over and over that besides me seeing it in the system exactly as I was spelling it with only first and last name, I know how to spell my name. I had to hang up. I called right back and got someone who said he didn’t know what the heck the other man was talking about. This isn’t the first time I’ve had something weird that made absolutely no sense with PayPal.

    Aloha?DeAnna!

This is Francois, from Vancouver, Canada. I have some Questions:

~ Q1: I would like to ask if I can Square magstripe on my iPod touch via WIFI internet connection, or do we need a cell phone for it to work?

~ Q2: I thought the client payment cc via Square magstripe goes onto our cc account, but, another BQH post mentioned that it goes into our bank account, which one is it?

Would be kind enough in providing clarification. Thank you kindly!

    Take Great care!

    Namaste?,
    Francois
